Effects of Pepper Spray
General Effects of Pepper Spray
In general, pepper spray causes the attacker to feel the follwing effects of pepper spray:
Eyes shut completely, uncontrolable wheezing, coughing, and choking. All affected skin and orofices feel a very painful burning sensation.
Detailed Effects Of Pepper Spray
Pepper Spray has four physiological effects that may be experienced:
Eyes: tears induced, involuntary shutting of eyelids or complete closing due to dilation of the capillaries in the eye iteself. Eyes will be bloodshot for 40 to 50 minutes. Eyeglasses or contact lenses will have little or no effect. The effects of pepper spray will be experienced by somebody with sunglasses on.
Respiratory System: fast and instant inflammation, swelling of the tissue that lines the throat which reduces the amount of air that can pass through the attackers windpipe. Respiratory abilities become normal within 15 to 30 minutes. The windpipe will be open to allow for oxygen flow for survival. Due to the effect of reduced airway flow, the person will probably not receive enough oxygen to continue struggling with the victim or other ongoing physical stress. The effects of pepper spray are crippling in this respect.
One doctor who suffered the effects of pepper spray in his testing described it like this: "Temporary larynx paralysis.
Uncontrolable gagging, coughing, and wheezing for air with a near vomiting sensation in the throat. The effects of pepper spray are not trivial."
Effect on the skin: inflammation of the affected skin with a severe burning sensation.
Effects on muscle control: Pepper Spray exposure may cause an attacker to lose orientation and center of balance due to the effect of Pepper Spray on vision.
Because Pepper Spray causes a number of physiological effects on a person-even those with higher pain tolerance due to a state of drunkedness or influence of other drugs. On the other hand, Mace does not. Mace has effects that will not change the behaviour of people with a high threshold for pain. The effects of pepper spray reach those who have mental barriers because the physical effects are significant. Mace pepper spray does not have this same effect. The mentally disturbed or people under the influence of alcohol are still subject to the inflammatory effects of Pepper Spray. Remember that teargas does not paralyze in the same regard as the pepper spray effects do. The aggressor might still be able to walk, run, or try to grab the victim. For this reason, we sell only the pure potent Pepper Spray product. Pepper spray effects are best when the OC concentration and the measurement of heat units are high.
Pepper Spray is used on psychiatric patients and on people in poor health. Tests have not been done as to reactions that pepper spray might have with particular medications or specific forms of respiratory illness.
Pepper Spray gas causes the protective layer across the eye to become inflamed, which some people speculate could lead to blindness. There is no evidence of any case of blindness due to pepper spray.
Pepper Spray causes severe pain to the skin and scalp. In some cases, the victims have found it necessary to cut off the hair covered by the oily substance.
Pepper Spray in some cases has caused significant intestinal and GI digestive issues. Pepper Spray also causes severe breathing problems.
Deaths that have been loosely associated with Pepper Spray are usually related to asphyxia and cardiac arrests that occur during or after spraying. That is a person with weak lungs or heart cannot withstand the stress on the respiratory system. There have been several such cases in California where people who were pepper sprayed died - the deaths were not directly due to the effects of pepper spray.
According to one online news source: "In 20 years of use by police and civilians there has never been a single
substantiated case of lasting health damage caused by pepperspray."
Pepper Spray can provoke ??sudden decrease in heart rate and heartbeat output and a significant fall in blood pressure." In testing the effects of pepper spray on animal test cases, the decrease in heart rate with the active ingredient, capsaicin, stimulates airways and nerve endings. This effect is accompanied by reduction of electrical activity through the heart. This pepper spray effect may have the potential for inducing life threatening irregularities in the heart beat. Again there are no proven cases of such an effect, but medical professionals know that such an effect is possible due to the reduction of blood pressure and negative effects on the respiratory system.
Effects of Pepper Spray in the News
On April 19, 2005, a group of Milford, CT prisoners in the Superior Court lockup were suffering from painful respiratory effects after the use of pepper spray by a court marshal.
Harold Streit, fire captain, said that 16 prisoners were suffering from breathing problems in a holding cell area that had no ventialation. Fire men were not able to access the area due to the lack of proper security for the containment of the prisoners.
Four prisoners were taken by ambluance to the Hospital for examination. One prisoner had a red color to his face because he was in the direct line of fire from the pepper spray. The prison guards developed a path for the exit of the prisoners and some were taken via stretcher for precautionary purposes.
The street along the courthouse was blocked off for nearly an hour. According to the fire captain, Milford police also assisted with controlling the prisoners in the lock-up area.
After the area was ventilated and police arrived for prisoner control purposes, firefighters were able to help the prisoners with breathing problems, and take them to waiting ambulances.
The pepper spray did not spread from the courthouse basement to other areas of the court house.
None of the prisoners sustained long-term injuries or effects of pepper spray.
Less Potent Pepper Spray Used For Medicinal Purposes
There is now a product on the market called Sinus Buster which is the first nasal spray made using the same ingredients as the pepper spray weapon. Capsicum (also known as ( OC Pepper Spray) is a 100% natural resin derived from certain varieties of hot peppers. The active chemical in Capsicum is ?Capsaicin,? the ingredient that makes the firey sensation in hot peppers.
Although Capsaicin is its? main active ingredient, the product formula uses a rare secret mix of natural herbs that are designed to work in combination with the OC oil.
?We adhere to strict standards so we can say Sinus Buster is all natural. A lot of natural health and dietary supplements out there call themselves all natural, but in truth many are not. I use this stuff too?everyday of my life... I refuse to put something up my nose that?s not all natural."
Needless to say, the moderate use of pepper spray for medicinal purposes clearly shows that OC Pepper Spray is a natural and generally very safe product.
